Your home may be private property, and your castle, but if someone injures themselves on your property you may be liable. The personal injury laws that involve premises liability can sometimes be quite complex and perhaps even seem a little unreasonable.

You may know that there is a missing paving stone just before the front steps that you are getting around to fixing. If a traveling salesman (or anyone else) walks up your path, trips over because he didn’t see the hole caused by the missing step, and injures him self he might be able to bring a personal injury case against you. If you had placed a large warning sign there and/or a brightly colored temporary covering over the gap it is unlikely that you would be held liable as you would have been fulfilling your duty.

Of course it is not just out of fear of litigation that we should keep our yards safe, but it pays to make sure you have enough insurance cover just in case. Family safety is important especially when children are around. Safe routines and maintenance practices are simple and thoughtful. Here is a basic checklist you could use as a starting point.
