There is no personal injury that bears greater implications than an injury that causes loss of sight or blindness. Loss of sight injuries can be not only devastating, but can totally change the quality of the victim’s life forever. Loss of sight personal injuries can be either partial or total (blindness), and can be temporary or permanent. Loss of sight can affect both eyes, or affect just one eye. If you have been involved in a personal injury that resulted in a loss of sight, or your relative or loved one has experienced this type of trauma, you likely have questions about what the future holds. The victim in this type of case has rights to compensation under personal injury law.

Causes of Loss of Sight Personal Injuries

Although there are many reasons that a person may be inflicted with a loss of sight personal injury resulting in partial or total blindness, the most common causes are:

Assault – victims of crime may experience head trauma or injuries to the eye area due to being struck by an object or another person.

Bright Lights – damage that is either permanent or temporary can occur when eyes are exposed to super bright lights; this type of loss of sight injury is more common among those in the welding industry, although explosions, lasers, and other lights can have the same effect.

Chemicals – chemical burns in the eye(s) can lead to loss of sight or blindness, often because of spills or accidental splashes; this type of injury is usually a workplace-related injury.

Electric Shock – electrical shocks can cause blindness, both from the jolt of electricity and from the sudden bright light flash that is emitted.

Grit – although the eye has an amazing way of protecting itself from most grit, dust, dirt and particulate matter, it is still possible for some of these substances to get into the eye cavity and cause loss of sight or even blindness – thus the recommendation of using safety goggles when working with machinery.

Head Trauma – impact to the head or face area or head trauma can lead to loss of sight and brain injury.

Medical Negligence – mistakes made by medical professionals may result in loss of sight personal injuries or blindness; as an example, laser eye surgery gone awry or failure to diagnose a condition that can ultimately lead to blindness.
